The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has introduced a groundbreaking innovation in the delivery of multilingual media services by launching Remote Simultaneous Interpretation (RSI), a solution that has been deployed for the first time duringpress conferences at the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), PAMOJA 2024.

For the first time in CAF history, and among the first in global sports organisations, accredited media attending the competition being hosted acrossKenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, are using the technology that has redefined media access.

Journalists attending press conferences are able to access real-time audio interpretation in multiple languages using their own mobile phones, eliminating the need for traditional bulky headsets or receivers.

How it works:

• Journalists attending press conferences receive a QR code to access the live interpretation.
• Using their own mobile phones and earphones, they listen in their preferred language through a web browser.
• Each language has a dedicated channel managed by professional CAF interpreters.

The initiative is driven by CAF’sCommunications Division, under the leadership of Luxolo September, and executed by the Language Services Unit, led by Patrice Godonou.

“This is a transformational step for how CAF supports the media and positions CAF among the world’s most innovative sports organisations in terms of language access,” said Luxolo September, CAF’s Head of Communications.

“With RSI, no journalist will miss a message due to language limitations. It reflects our commitment to innovation, inclusion, and ensuring African football speaks to every corner of the continent and the world.”“It is simple, cost-effective and above all, accessible, allowing journalists to follow and record in real-time using only their phones and earphones without the need for complicated on-site equipment,” added Godonou, CAF Language Services Manager.

This initiative is part of CAF Communications Division’s broader commitment to innovation and inclusion in African football.

In addition to Remote Interpretation, CAF has ramped up other media services for CHAN 2024, including improved Wi-Fi access, digital content distribution, and extended matchday media operations to serve over 800 accredited journalists covering the event.

The TotalEnergies CAF CHAN PAMOJA 2024 has reached the quarter-final stage with four matches scheduled to be played on Friday, 22 August and Saturday, 23 August.
